Microsoft Copilot for Word Can Copy Hidden Prompts Into New Documents

Microsoft 365 Copilot can copy hidden instructions from one Word document into another, potentially exposing sensitive data. The technique was disclosed by researcher Håkon Måløy after 144 days of reporting it to Microsoft.

Microsoft 365 Copilot for Word has a new issue that allows hidden instructions in a Word document to be copied into a new file.

The behavior was demonstrated by researcher Håkon Måløy, who showed how the hidden prompts can be used to rewrite figures in a report and then replicate the same instructions in the finished document.

Måløy disclosed the technique on July 28, 144 days after he had reported the issue to Microsoft.

In his proof of concept, the internally generated file triggered the same behavior when it was used in a second Copilot drafting session.

The technique relies on Copilot's ability to interpret hidden text and incorporate it into the final output.

This behavior could expose sensitive data or instructions that were not intended to be visible in the final document.

Microsoft has been notified and is reportedly investigating the issue.

Users are advised to review any hidden prompts in their documents and ensure they are not inadvertently carried over to new files.

Updating to the latest security patches and following best practices for document handling can help mitigate the risk.

The incident highlights the need for vigilance when using Copilot in professional settings.
